Recently I received a security threat alert triggered by Dropbox, as seen in the screenshot below:

What happened here? Or this is a false alert from Microsoft Security Essentials?

Does Windows 8 Developer Preview come pre-installed with anti-virus software?
I'm testing Windows 8 on my laptop and it's running great; I just want to make sure it's secure.
Should I install Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 8 Developer Preview?

I have Windows 7 with Security Essentials as anti-virus program.
Recently I plugged in a flash drive and SE quarantined some important files.
I tried Restore option, but failed with some error.
Now I need to at least find the names of the affected files. Is there any way I can view it's log files?

As all MSE users would know, the context-menu item that it adds to Explorer is really long, with one whole sentence "Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials...". Is there a way to edit this and shorten it?
I figured out the the file shellext.dll
is responsible for registering the context menu. I used ResEdit to edit the DLL and changed the string table entry from Scan with ($BrandName)
to Scan with MSE
. But it still won't change. I've also tried de-registering the DLL and then registering it again. No luck!
Any ideas? Or am I doing something wrong?

Of late, MSE has stopped starting the real time protection on its own. I see the red icon in the tray.
I tried to start the real time protection myself but I get an error code: 0x800705b4
.
I had a look at a similar problem here and I find that Microsoft AntiVirus Service is started even when the icon is red. I have even repaired my .NET from Control Panel. None of it seems to help.
A strange thing is that task manager's Services tab shows MSE as running. I decided to run a scan and then the icon updated to show Potentially Unprotected which is normal because I use CCleaner.
Can someone please tell me how to solve this?

I research this sort of thing and don't really want it to be quarantining the hacking tools as malware, because they aren't really.

Will the The Microsoft Security Essentials work with Firefox? (I only use IE for WinXP updates.)

It's running in the background, and seems to be working fine, but is there a way to disable its system tray icon so I don't have to see it down there unless it's detecting something going awry?

I've been using MSE for a couple months now, never had a single problem. All of a sudden the process "MsMpEng.exe" will randomly go crazy and hog all my system resources so I can't do anything unless I kill it in the task manager. (I've quit the program for now and my comp is running smooth). When I restart the program, reboot, whatever, it goes off and hogs all the resources again after a couple minutes. If I kill the process it will go away and then come back a couple minutes later and do the same thing. I've scanned with MSE, another antivirus and malware with no probs. Any ideas? Should I uninstall and find something else? The thing is I've liked it so far. I'm running Win7 64-bit.
Also, I'm not running any other conflicting security programs. This is the only one on my PC right now. Windows Defender is also off.

So, I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials lately. And it usually takes a couple hours or more for it to full scan my hard drive. Because of that, I commonly leave it scanning while I go do something else. Problem is: 10 minutes later, windows 7 goes to sleep, and the scan is (obviously) paused. That's What I'd like to stop happening.
So far, the only way I've been able to avoid it was to create a power plan, and switch to it while away, to keep the PC from sleeping. Problem is that I have to keep switching power plans and I'd like the PC to be able to go to sleep in case MSE finishes scanning and I'm still not back.
Maybe I'm just asking for too much, but I've been surprised by the users here plenty of times already. So let me know if you know how to keep the PC from sleeping while MSE is scanning.
Thanks

It only seems to work for me with a direct connect.
And i cant find anywhere to set a proxy.
Windows 7 64bit.
As for why... we are in development network that is isolated from the organizations production network. So we just wanted a lightweight virus scanner without having to setup any corporate update server or the like.

What is the difference between Windows Defender on Windows 8 and Microsoft Security Essentials? They practically look alike, so is there a need to install Security Essentials?
